A Simple Spell to Carry the Sun’s Strength

As midsummer approaches and the sun reaches its peak power, the days become charged with energy—light, warmth, growth… and change. It’s the perfect time to craft a protection charm using ingredients that have been used in folk magic for centuries.

This DIY spell is simple, powerful, and can be adapted whether you’re in a forest, a cottage, or your own cosy corner of the world.

🌞 Why Make a Midsummer Charm?

The summer solstice (June 21) is a liminal time when the veil thins—not just between the living and the dead, but between the seen and unseen, the inner and outer. It’s traditionally a time for:

  • Blessing your home
  • Cleansing your energy
  • Protecting yourself from spirits or misfortune

By creating a charm now, you’re bottling some of the sun’s strength to carry with you through the rest of the year.

🧵 What You’ll Need

All of these materials have deep roots in European folk magic and seasonal traditions. Feel free to substitute with what you have on hand.

🌿 Ingredients:

  • A small pouch or scrap of natural cloth (white, yellow, or green are best)
  • Dried herbs:
    • Rosemary (for protection)
    • Lavender (for peace and clarity)
    • St. John’s Wort or Mugwort (for midsummer magic and spirit protection)
  • A pinch of salt (for grounding and cleansing)
  • Sun-charged item (a small crystal, pebble, or coin you’ve left in sunlight for at least 2 hours)
  • A length of natural string or thread (red or gold works beautifully)
  • Optional: a charm, shell, or feather for added symbolic power

🕯️ How to Craft It

  1. Cleanse your space: Light a candle, burn incense, or use sound (like a bell or chime) to clear the energy.
  2. Lay out your items, and take a deep breath. Visualise golden light surrounding your space.
  3. Fill your pouch with the herbs, salt, and your sun-charged item.
  4. As you tie it closed, speak aloud (or whisper):
“By sun and soil, leaf and light,
I bind this charm with sacred might.
Guard my steps, both near and far,
As I carry midsummer in this jar.”
  5. Tie the charm with your thread, sealing your intent.

🧚‍♀️ How to Use Your Charm

  • Hang it above your door to protect your home.
  • Keep it in your bag or pocket when travelling or walking in wild places.
  • Place it beside your bed to ward off nightmares and invite peaceful dreams.
  • Bury it in your garden or in a potted plant to bless your space with protection and growth.

This charm should last until Samhain (October 31), at which point you can bury its contents and make a new one for the dark half of the year.
